Sharing my May Reading Wrap-Up. This is my classroom, not my usual content. Yesterday was a big, heavy, hard day. It was my daughter’s drive-through preschool graduation, it was the day I was assigned to go in (wearing mask and gloves) to clean my classroom that hasn’t seen students since March 13th, and lock it up for the summer. ⁣ ⁣ And it was #blackouttuesday, and #bookstagram exploded with book recs, reading lists, causes to donate to, and countless posts on how we can all help. Because this community is incredible and focused on doing good. ⁣ ⁣ I have a lot of thoughts, but I don’t have the right words. I can’t pretend to always know what to do or to have done enough, but I’m learning. I’m listening. I’m committed. ⁣ ⁣ One thing I do know is that for the past 7 years my teaching partners and I have been obsessed with bringing high-interest, diverse books to our classrooms. And this video shows a glimpse of the work we’ve done (minus the books my students still have at home). Every #donorschoose project we request (and we have made a LOT) has asked for books to help kids learn empathy, tolerance, acceptance, to celebrate diversity, and to change the world through reading. It is so important that students see themselves mirrored in the characters they read, and that they experience characters completely different than them. That’s something, one thing, I know I’ve done right. ⁣ ⁣ My students have looked to the LGBTQ shelves and have found comfort from an Oreo-eating boy named Simon. They’ve been enraged when Starr’s best friend and Rashad are victims of police brutality. They’ve read Kwame Alexander’s novels in verse again and again, because they thought they were getting away with reading a short book, and came back for more because they loved it so much. They’ve wept as Joseph, an eighth grader like them, tries to find his daughter while living in foster care. Ghost, Patina, Sunny and Lu are close friends of theirs. ⁣ ⁣ This year my 115 students read over a thousand books. In my eyes, that’s a thousand steps in the right direction. ⁣ ⁣ That’s what I’ve done. But that’s not all I’ll do. I promise. ⁣ ⁣ #weneeddiversebooks

🚀 🌙 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Aurora Rising⁣ ⁣ 𝗦𝗬𝗡𝗢𝗣𝗦𝗜𝗦: Set in space hundreds of years in the future, Alpha, Tyler, accidentally rescues a girl who has been frozen for over 200 years, causing him to miss the draft. The much anticipated draft places graduates into squads when all of their training is done. Tyler was first in his class and should have gotten first pick. Instead he got the bottom of the barrel, a group of misfits and an underwhelming first mission. So they think...⁣ ⁣ 𝗠𝗬 𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦: I loved this book! I kept seeing it everywhere and honestly thought I owned it. Didn’t it come in an Owlcrate? I guess not. So, when it was a Kindle deal of the day I downloaded it and started it on a whim. So good! I also kept thinking about how I should finish the books in the 𝘐𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘦 series, come to find out they’re written by the same authors...get it together, Amanda. Anyway, Squad 312 is made up of 6 awesome characters, each telling their point of view in alternating perspectives, and each witty, strange, and amazing. I loved their connections, their banter, their secret love connections, and their adventures. Spoiler alert (sort of): my skin was literally crawling, goosebumps, chills, and itching when I read the part about the flowery succulents that had taken over the ground, buildings, animals and humans. #Trypophobia is real! I get the same feeling when I see the inside of a pomegranate. So, #midnightsun is going to be a good time for me. Happy Friday!⁣ Went on Twitter for like 3 minutes today and immediately regretted it and remembered why I deleted Facebook and haven’t opened Twitter in months. This #bookstagramcommunity is so unique and positive. It’s our own happy little corner of the internet. ⁣ ⁣ Sometimes it’s easy to focus on followers, likes, and finding the perfect lighting.
