WHAT IF IT’S US? Book Review | 3.5/5 Stars

What If It’s Us? – Published 2018

“Arthur is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a showstopping romance when you least expect it.

Ben thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things.

But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them?

Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated.

Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.

But what if they can’t quite nail a first date . . . or a second first date . . . or a third?

What if Arthur tries too hard to make it work . . . and Ben doesn’t try hard enough?

What if life really isn’t like a Broadway play?

But what if it is?” – Goodreads

WHAT I LIKED

This book was highly anticipated for me. And, like always, when I look forward to a book for too long, I prolong reading it because I am not ready for it to be over. I adored Simon and The Upside as well as all of Silvera’s books, but I HATED Leah. So, what I loved about this book, is that I didn’t know which parts/chapters/characters each author was responsible for, and I would like to keep it that way. If I knew which parts Becky wrote, it might leave a bad taste in my mouth because of Leah having pretty recently been read. I was just blissfully unaware and could enjoy their snarkiness, wit, and charm again. Both of them. Because they’re both incredible authors and humans.

The diversity in this is awesome. Not only are the characters gay, but one is Jewish, one has ADHD, one struggles in school, and they’re both just really great.

Unpopular opinion? I liked the ending. It was really satisfying for me to have a YA novel end in such a way. I won’t spoil it, but I enjoyed it.

Dylan’s obsession with coffee. I can relate, man. Dylan’s character is probably my favorite of the book.

WHAT I DID NOT LIKE

I like drama and uncertainty, so when (SPOILER) Arthur and Ben are just dating, I’m kind of whatever on it all. That part of the book was slow for me. I need heartache and anxiety in my YA love stories.

There were a couple of super anticlimactic events that should have been a much bigger deal.
